Bard was designed to help with follow-up questions — something new to search. It also had a share-conversation function and a double-check Chat PG function that helped users fact-check generated results. Since then we’ve continued to make investments in AI across the board, and Google AI and DeepMind are advancing the state of the art. Today, the scale of the largest AI computations is doubling every six months, far outpacing Moore’s Law.

This can significantly reduce agent design time and improve agent quality. Now, our newest AI technologies — like LaMDA, PaLM, Imagen and MusicLM — are building on this, creating entirely new ways to engage with information, from language and images to video and audio. It’s able to understand and recognize images, enabling it to parse complex visuals, such as charts and figures, without the need for external optical character recognition (OCR). While OpenAI’s ChatGPT has become a worldwide phenomenon and one of the fastest-growing consumer products ever, Google’s Bard has been something of an afterthought. The propensity of Gemini to generate hallucinations google chatbot and other fabrications and pass them along to users as truthful is also a cause for concern. This has been one of the biggest risks with ChatGPT responses since its inception, as it is with other advanced AI tools.

We’re excited for this phase of testing to help us continue to learn and improve Bard’s quality and speed. At Google I/O 2023, the company announced Gemini, a large language model created by Google DeepMind. At the time of Google I/O, the company reported that the LLM was still in its early phases. On February 8, Google introduced the new Google One AI Premium Plan, which costs $19.99 per month, the same as OpenAI’s and Microsoft’s premium plans, ChatGPT Plus and Copilot Pro.

Gemini currently uses Google’s Imagen 2 text-to-image model, which gives the tool image generation capabilities. A key challenge for LLMs is the risk of bias and potentially toxic content. According to Google, Gemini underwent extensive safety testing and mitigation around risks such as bias and toxicity to help provide a degree of LLM safety. To help further ensure Gemini works as it should, the models were tested against academic benchmarks spanning language, image, audio, video and code domains. Specifically, the Gemini LLMs use a transformer model-based neural network architecture. The Gemini architecture has been enhanced to process lengthy contextual sequences across different data types, including text, audio and video.

Why did Google rename Bard to Gemini and when did it happen?

On February 22nd Google said it would halt the generation of images of people while it rejigged Gemini. But by then attention had moved on to the chatbot’s text responses, which turned out to be just as surprising. Then, as part of the initial launch of Gemini on Dec. 6, 2023, Google provided direction on the future of its next-generation LLMs.

We’re deeply familiar with issues involved with machine learning models, such as unfair bias, as we’ve been researching and developing these technologies for many years. With Google’s no-code conversational and search tools, any business can rapidly create a compelling bot experience for its brand. Plus, developers have the freedom to granularly blend the output of Google’s foundational models with their enterprise content over time.

A simple step-by-step process was required for a user to enter a prompt, view the image Gemini generated, edit it and save it for later use. Kambhampati also says Google’s claim that 100 AI experts were impressed by Gemini is similar to a toothpaste tube boasting that “eight out of 10 dentists” recommend its brand. It would be more meaningful for Google to show clear improvements on reducing the hallucinations that language models experience when serving web search results, he says. That may be inspired by the downright ebullient chatbots launched by some smaller AI upstarts, such as Pi from startup Inflection AI and the various app-specific personae that ChatGPT’s custom GPTs now have. When Google first unveiled the Gemini AI model it was portrayed as a new foundation for its AI offerings, but the company had held back the most powerful version, saying it needed more testing for safety.

Bard also integrated with several Google apps and services, including YouTube, Maps, Hotels, Flights, Gmail, Docs and Drive, letting users apply the AI tool to their personal content. Jasper Chat is a conversational AI tool that’s focused on generating text. It’s aimed at companies looking to create brand-relevant content and have conversations with customers. It enables content creators to specify search engine optimization keywords and tone of voice in their prompts. That opened the door for other search engines to license ChatGPT, whereas Gemini supports only Google.

PaLM 2 is our next generation large language model that builds on Google’s legacy of breakthrough research in machine learning and responsible AI. It can accomplish these tasks because of the way it was built – bringing together compute-optimal scaling, an improved dataset mixture, and model architecture improvements. PaLM 2 is grounded in Google’s approach to building and deploying AI responsibly.

“This highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, something that we’re kicking off this week with our Trusted Tester program,” a Google spokesperson told ZDNET. For example, when I asked Gemini, “What are some of the best places to visit in New York?”, it provided a list of places and included photos for each.

One concern about Gemini revolves around its potential to present biased or false information to users. Any bias inherent in the training data fed to Gemini could lead to wariness among users. For example, as is the case with all advanced AI software, training data that excludes certain groups within a given population will lead to skewed outputs. In other countries where the platform is available, the minimum age is 13 unless otherwise specified by local laws. When Bard was first introduced last year it took longer to reach Europe than other parts of the world, reportedly due to privacy concerns from regulators there. The Gemini AI model that launched in December became available in Europe only last week.

Yoffie adds that charging for access to Gemini Advanced makes sense because of how expensive the technology is to build—as Google CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged in an interview with WIRED. You might have been familiar with AI chats powered by Large Language Model (LLM) such as OpenAI ChatGPT or Google Bard. We’ve been working on an experimental conversational AI service, powered by LaMDA, that we’re calling Bard. And today, we’re taking another step forward by opening it up to trusted testers ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks. LaMDA was built on Transformer, Google’s neural network architecture that the company invented and open-sourced in 2017. Interestingly, GPT-3, the language model ChatGPT functions on, was also built on Transformer, according to Google.

The Ultra model is the top end and is designed for highly complex tasks. As of Dec. 13, 2023, Google enabled access to Gemini Pro in Google Cloud Vertex AI and Google AI Studio. For code, a version of Gemini Pro is being used to power the Google AlphaCode 2 generative AI coding technology. It might be difficult for users to notice the leaps forward Google says its chatbot has taken. Subbarao Kambhampati, a professor at Arizona State University who focuses on AI, says discerning significant differences between large language models like those behind Gemini and ChatGPT has become difficult.

Over time, our advances in these and other areas have made it easier and easier to organize and access the heaps of information conveyed by the written and spoken word. The multimodal nature of Gemini also enables these different types of input to be combined for generating output. After rebranding Bard to Gemini on Feb. 8, 2024, Google introduced a paid tier in addition to the free web application. However, users can only get access to Ultra through the Gemini Advanced option for $20 per month. Users sign up for Gemini Advanced through a Google One AI Premium subscription, which also includes Google Workspace features and 2 terabytes of storage. Google CEO Sundar Pichai called Bard “a souped-up Civic” compared to ChatGPT and Bing Chat, now Copilot. The best part is that Google is offering users a two-month free trial as part of the new plan. According to Gemini’s FAQ, as of February, the chatbot is available in over 40 languages, a major advantage over its biggest rival, ChatGPT, which is available only in English. Soon, users will also be able to access Gemini on mobile via the newly unveiled Gemini Android app or the Google app for iOS. Previously, Gemini had a waitlist that opened on March 21, 2023, and the tech giant granted access to limited numbers of users in the US and UK on a rolling basis.

At its release, Gemini was the most advanced set of LLMs at Google, powering Bard before Bard’s renaming and superseding the company’s Pathways Language Model (Palm 2). As was the case with Palm 2, Gemini was integrated into multiple Google technologies to provide generative AI capabilities. Sundar is the CEO of Google and Alphabet and serves on Alphabet’s Board of Directors.

That version, Gemini Ultra, is now being made available inside a premium version of Google’s chatbot, called Gemini Advanced. Accessing it requires a subscription to a new tier of the Google One cloud backup service called AI Premium. Typically, a $10 subscription to Google One comes with 2 terabytes of extra storage and other benefits; now that same package is available with Gemini Advanced thrown in for $20 per month.
